Women in Okhla are no more restricted to their homes. Several of them have set examples for youngsters by achieving their dreams.
Tabassum Khan is no different from such brave women. A housewife and mother of two children, she took entrepreneurship plunge recently to open JD Unisex Salon in Abul Fazal Enclave (AFE) in partnership with Faisal Khan.
Spread across 1,400 square feet with trendy interior, the salon has 15 employees, including eight gents and seven women, and opens from 10 AM to 11 PM seven days in K-108 A, Thokar number 5, AFE.
Coming from a different background, they used their strengths to make a name for themselves in a very short period of time.
When asked why she opened a salon and not any other business venture in Okhla and whether her family members objected to it, Tabassum said: “Many in our family members were not happy that we were opening salon as many strongly feel that the profession is looked down and is for people of a particular community. Despite, this we went by our decision. And after more than a month we are happy to see the overwhelming response from residents.
“There was always a need for trendy salon in the locality providing quality service. Many of our customers thank us for saving their time as earlier they used to go to Lajpat Nagar and other places for hair cut and availing other facilities.”
To reach residents, the salon owners have approached online and offline advertisement strategies.
The page: facebook.com/jdunisex is going strong, receiving more than 1,500 likes in a short period of time with several positive reviews.

Talking about how the idea struck her to start the salon, Tabassum said: “I was sitting with some friends in a Noida house and there was talk about Jamia Nagar. They told me to move to Noida as Jamia Nagar was a ghetto with little facilities. I argued and after that I decided to do something to change the image of the locality. As I decided to start this salon we approached many big brands but at the end of the day JD agreed to sign for the franchise. And now everything is going well.”
