A water body at Okhla Head was being cleaned today. Residents said that the work started in the morning and continued till evening. The move has been appreciated by residents. Old timers still remember that this water body was clean with many youths during summers used to swim and in those days there was only one bridge connecting Okhla Head with Abul Fazal Enclave.
With the new bridge coming up, the old bridge cries for attention and is now unused.
It is important to point out that some local residents had raised the issue of this water body. Moreover, efforts are being made across the Capital to revive water bodies.
The National Green Tribunal had directed the Delhi government and the civic bodies to restore expeditiously all water bodies in the city and ensure that these remain clean not become a waste-dumping yard.
“We make it clear that needs of the water body, will require protection of its catchment area and prevent siltation due to erosion and dumping of waste which alone will ensure a healthy water body rich in aquatic life and biodiversity. This project should commence forthwith. South Municipal Corporation is hereby directed to provide full cooperation to Delhi Jal Board and provide all assistance to it and the executing agency would ensure that no waste of any kind is thrown in the water body,” the Bench had said as reported by IE in May.
