It is 8 pm on a chilly wintry day and several people are standing outside the roti shop at Okhla Head waiting for their turns.
Abdus Salam, who has been running this shop for the last 35 years, is busy dealing with the customers, along with three other staff.
It was 35 years ago, when Salam landed in Okhla from Bihar’s Darbhanga and started this shop. In those days selling only rotis was something new in the locality that was growing gradually. When asked what convinced him to open only roti shop in Okhla, he said he was already running a shop in his hometown.
Salam proudly pointed out that his shop once featured in Baazi film starring Dharmendra, Rekha, Mithun Chakraborty, Ranjeeta, Shakti Kapoor, Madan Puri and Mac Mohan. The film was directed in 1984 by Raj N. Sippy. “In those days the film’s shooting was done near Kalindi Kunj and at Okhla Head. A sugarcane shop and the whole Okhla Head chauraha was featured in the movie,” he said.
For years Salam was the king in the locality and many people were seen flocking his shop to lay hands on rotis. However, with the locality growing and many roti shops being opened locally like in Abul Fazal Enclave, Shaheen Bagh and other places, the business has been slowed down a bit.
