Three leaders, including Zia Chaudhary, Mahmood Ahmed of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), were detained in the morning as they had turned up at the spot and were seen standing with the women protesters, who were raising slogans against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and then later on shifted their anger against the varsity.
Syed Faizan Sarkar was also detained. All of them were released after the operation demolition was over, claimed sources.
They were detained and then taken to a nearby police station by police.
Later on police also rounded up the protesting women. It was after which the operation demolition of the colony build on Jamia land was carried out peacefully. Till the filing of the report, the operation has been accomplished with all structures being demolished, according to eyewitnesses.
The demolition witnessed some tense moments in the morning when a few women blocked the road and started protesting. But the protest was feeble as they could not get much support. Other residents were convinced that as the land belonged to Jamia they were living illegally. Despite this, residents were deeply upset by the move and demanded compensation. Jamia has been fighting the case to acquire this land for long and heaved a sigh of relief after the “sensitive” operation was accomplished amid unprecedented high security.
