‘Suicide cases’ among Muslim girls on rise in Okhla

Committing suicide is something that is rarely talked about in Muslim society as Islam prohibits talking one’s life.

Despite this reality, unfailingly reports of Muslims committing suicide do surface. A few days ago one such report had surfaced in Okhla, a Muslim-dominated locality whose large number of residents are educated and middle class.

The report of a Jamia girl student committing suicide in Shaheen Bagh at his was taken with a pinch of salt by residents. However, the official version was suicide that was denied by family and friends.

This was not only one incident as residents claimed that a few months ago another newly married woman committed suicide. In this case too several residents suspected the version being peddled in the locality by some. In the last one year, the locality has witnessed three cases in which girls have committed suicide, said a resident, adding that it is such a sensitive issue that rarely anybody wishes to discuss.

Moreover, once the incident takes place nobody comes forward. And as social pressure is so high that even local reporters avoid going deep into such stories to find out what led to death, said an Okhla watcher. Though there is no data on how many girls committed suicide in the locality as NGOs and religious organizations with swanky buildings and huge budget have other important things to deal with, it estimated these three deaths in a year is a cause of concern for residents.

Many residents pointed out that three deaths due to suicide are not a big number as more than four lakh people live in the overcrowded locality. They are right but the big question is that what is prompting these girls to committed suicide even it is a minuscule number.
