Rashid’s devilish act brings shame to Okhla

The report of a drunkard man killing his toddler in Jamia Nagar by throwing her in the drain as she used to not keep well and cry a lot has left residents stumped. Many were left speechless and some unable to believe the report with a stay-at-home mother Ghazia Khanam asking: “How can a man do such things to a baby who has been reported to be just one year old.”

It has been reported that after a complaint filed by Rashid Zamal’s wife Modia Begum, local police swung into action and anyhow managed to locate the accused who is a rag picker and before moving to Shaheen Bagh was residing in Madanpur Khadar with his family.

The dead body of the baby was found 56 hours after the incident and the Rashid was arrested and booked.

“He told us that he disliked her and didn’t want to take care of her because she was often very ill,” said a senior police officer, adding that it was on the intervening night of September 18 and 19 when they had received a call from Shaheen Bagh about the incident.

“The wife said he was beating her, his elder son and the daughter. The son managed to flee and when the wife went out to call the neighbours, he left with the daughter,” said the officer.

“The whole area was searched but the girl couldn’t be found at the time. A case of kidnapping was registered and Rashid was taken for one-day custody. He said he was drunk and didn’t remember anything,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-East) Romil Baaniya.

According to police, Rashid has three wives and eight children. The victim was the daughter of his third wife. Many residents said it is first case of such barbarity reported from Jamia Nagar.

“The man should be punished. Alcohol is ruins the head and it appears that this man committed the crime under the influence of alcohol. As the locality is growing and new people are coming people need to be careful. I read in newspaper that Rashid was from Assam. The incident has given a bad name to the locality,” said Javed Iqbal Khan.
