As the clock struck 5 today evening, campaigning for the April 23 MCD elections came to an end.
The high-decibel campaign witnessed all the major players trying all they could to woo the voters.
Giving a big boost to his chance in the ward, Janata Dal (United) candidate Sarwar Iqbal Khan from ward number 102 S Abul Fazal Enclave was next to none in impressing upon the voters by holding an impressive rally.
The Bihar-based JD (U) invested all its energy and lined up galaxy of star leaders to campaign for Sarwar in the ward which is witnessing a tight contest among several parties, including the Congress, the Aam Admi Party (AAP), the Samajwadi Party (SP), RJD and the JD (U).
Rajya Sabha MP and National General Secretary RCP Singh is said to have asked all its MPs, MLAs and even Minister to visit the ward and interact with residents to garner support for Sarwar.
“We want this seat at any cost,” said Sarwar’s close aide.
While addressing an election rally at Nayi Basti on Thursday evening, Singh himself appealed for votes.
“We want you to cast your votes in favour of our candidate. I am assuring you that we will not let you down. We have a proven record in Bihar and we will replicate the same in this constituency,” he told the gathering.
Stressing on the need to select a good candidate, he said: “This is not Parliamentary and Assembly election. This is the election of the city’s civic body which impacts your day to day life. It is shameful that people are dying of dengue and chikungunya in the national Capital. We do not make tall promises, we believe in delivering on our promises. And we have done this in Bihar,” he added.
Earlier, JD(U)’s firebrand leader, former Rajya Sabha MP and incumbent MLC in Bihar, urged voters to back Sarwar in a Shaheen Bagh rally.
Will we get some or have to return empty hand, he asked.
The crowd responded in “yes”.
In its debut election in MCD, the JD (U) is aggressively campaigning in all 100 constituencies where it has fielded its candidate.
