Robbery fear grips Jamia Millia’s staff quarters in Mujeeb Bagh as several houses targeted since Friday

Robbery fear grips Jamia Millia’s staff quarters in Mujeeb Bagh as several houses targeted since Friday.

For years Jamia Millia Islamia employees residing in staff quarters of Mujeeb Bagh used to have a nice sleep with some even not bothering to bolt their doors. But things have changed since the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when robbers targeted two houses, succeeding in getting in house number 34 and decamping with several items, including mobile phones, bags and cash.

And then the robber came back to target the house of Professor Badshah Alam yesterday. It is understood that the robbers got into the house by cutting the wooden gate whereas in earlier case they got in by cutting mosquito net.

A house of another professor S M Mahmood, who is also secretary of Jamia Teachers’ Association, was also targeted. It is another story that the robbers were not successful. Several robberies and attempts in a last few days have left residents in shock as for years the area was safe and robbery never took place, said sources.

“Earlier, I used to live in Batla House. So we are in the habit of locking the rooms from inside. That is why the robbers were not successful. However, house of my colleague and neighbour Badshah Alam was burgled. These incidents are very new to this locality as everybody was sure of safety of the area for years. What is disturbing in this case is that there are at least seven people living in Badshah’s house and nobody could get the idea that robbers were in the house. It looks that the robbers used some items to keep them asleep for long hours,” SM Mahmood told OT.COM.

Wasiful Hasan, whose house was targeted in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday said it was in the morning at 4 am when we got up to see that many things were missing. “The robbers got into the house by cutting the mosquito net put on the window grill. We were not awake between 1 am and 4 am and it looks that it was during this time that the robbers arrived and took away mobiles and other items. It appears that the robbers use spray to keep you in a state where you can’t react. I heard the voices of things being rummaged in the house but I was not in a position to do anything until I woke up after 4 am.

“Before targeting my house, we came to know that house of another professor was targeted. As the children were awake in that house the robbers made their way. Residents are deeply concerned about their safety as earlier residents used to sleep bothering little about such incidents. Now people are on high alert,” he said.

All the three people told OT.COM that robbery started after night watchman was withdrawn from the premises. Earlier, there used to be three security guards and now there is only one, said Badshah Alam.

SM Mahmood concurred with Badshah Alam and said this could be one of the reasons. It is time that the administration should find out why such things are taking place. He said a few days ago he came to know that there was a robbery case in Noam Chomsky.

“The robbers targeted my house on Sunday night and took away mobiles and other items. The incidents have left residents deeply upset. In the last few days several houses have been targeted,” said Badhsah Alam.

FIRs in two cases have been filed.
