In a meeting between Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind leaders the issue of renaming of Aurangzeb Road was raised. According to the official Press release, JIH chief told the CM that the decision by the Delhi Government to change the name of Aurangzeb Road was incorrect.
It is understood that following which Arvind Kejriwal repented the move. His exact word is not known as there is no mention about it in the English press release issued by JIH. However, one JIH insider said Kejriwal’s statement was mentioned in Urdu release and it could not be mentioned in the English release as it was translated in a hurry and the point was missed.
Kejriwal could not be reached for his comments.
The renaming of Aurangzeb road after A P J Abdul Kalam had created a lot of controversy. The decision was taken by New Delhi Municipal Council just after East Delhi BJP MP Maheish Girri proposed the move to “correct the mistakes made in our history”.
After the road was renamed, minutes after it, Kejriwal, who is an NDMC member had then tweeted: “Congrats. NDMC just now decided to rename Aurangzeb Road to A P J Abdul Kalam Road.”
Later on former Okhla MLA Asif Md. Khan renamed a road in Okhla as Aurangzeb road.
