Protesting Jamia students march towards V-C office; stopped outside and video of Thursday incident

Some protesting students of Jamia Millia Islamia marched towards the Vice Chancellor office after the Friday prayer as they had announced yesterday. Till the filing of the report the students were stopped outside the gate and denied entry into the building housing the V-C’s office, said a student, who is part of the protest.

After the alleged scuffle on the campus on Thursday over holding of cultural event at the central canteen by students’ organization Dayare Shauk Student’s Charter (DSSC), some students had decided to continue their protest. On Thursday night some students slept near the Ghalib statue at gate 7 in protest.

The students had alleged that students were assaulted and female students manhandled.

“Guards and proctorial staff … attacked a peaceful gathering of students in the central canteen area during a cultural evening. The guards attacked students and manhandled the female students…. We the students demand resignation of the chief proctor,” wrote Amber Fatmi.

The three demands that the students have made to end their peaceful strike are: “Gherao V-C Office demanding resignation of the Proctor, immediate action against the guards who abused students and apology letter from the administration.”

“Several self-financing courses have classes until 7.30pm,” Jamia media coordinator Saima Saeed told TOI. The administration said the organisers were asked to shift the venue to avoid disturbing students.

However, the university is silent over the scuffle.

Several videos of the scuffle have been doing the rounds on the social media and WhatsApp since Thursday, a student said on the condition of anonymity. OT.COM stumbled upon one such video grabbed by one Sadat Eisar.

OT.COM was not able to ascertain the authenticity of the video that is of the central canteen where Jamia students are seen arguing with university bulls with the proctoral staff, including Proctor Haroon also present on the venue.
