Protest in Batla House against demolition

Protest has begun in Batla House against alleged demolition of colony amid heavy security in the morning.

Protest in Batla HouseAfter some initial protest things were under control with police successfully carrying out the court order to demolish the Abbasi colony build on Jamia land as claimed by authorities.

However, protesting residents were shouting slogans against Delhi Chief Minister and Jamia. They alleged that Jamia was making them homeless by snatching their land. However, university authorities presented paper and court order claiming that the 2.5 bigha land was university property that was illegally occupied for more than decades. A resident pointed out that though that land was illegally occupied for years, major work expedited in the last three years with many concrete building and shops coming up in the area.

A few women who had protested with three local leaders were detained and then other residents were convinced. No big leaders turned up at the spot. Before carrying out the demolition work power was cut and residents were urged to remove their items from the houses. Till the filing of the report at about 2 pm, majority of the demolition work was accomplished peacefully with little protests amid presence of heavy security never seen in the locality.
