Some professionals said they have started initiative to re-develop Okhla.
“A development initiative of local area has been started by group of architect, urban development practitioners, social workers and locals of Okhla in 2017. This development initiative model collaborates and working with international universities, NGO’s, government agencies and intellectuals of local area. The concept of initiative name is based on REDO action; it means re-develop Okhla. Working model of REDO is based on 4MAT (an American natural learning cycle system) which is directly associated with every sections of our society. 4MAT allows us how to connect, think, skills and do an action. REDO distributed in four working phases these are like local area plan, Okhla integrated urban local transportation planning, Okhla wards amenities and social development plan (which will cover social and cultural infrastructure) and last phase will be Yamuna river canal front development,” said organisers of REDO.
They said as existing scenario of past and current interventions by the government of NCT Delhi, individuals, agencies and also the private sector in dealing with the challenges that poses in local area of Okhla and Jamia Nagar such as basic amenities, development control, transportation, public health, school education and security and safety and women empowerment are negligible.
“It looks in detail at strategies that can be adopted by all interested parties in, not only improving current Okhla conditions, but also in preventing the further development of Okhla in south Delhi. A detailed analysis of a successful area improvement programme is set out and possible recommendations and proposals that will be discussed and implemented.
“In concluding this initiative, it is stressed that Okhla are the most obvious manifestation of failed strategies and policies. This is not a problem that is unique to Okhla. It is a national wide problem that is not going to go away without continued and intense efforts. We all should bear in mind that the prognosis is that the population of Okhla is on the increase. Unfortunately, this influx is, by and large, not going to be by those who can afford decent life in Okhla but by the poor and destitute who arrive in search of better opportunities and better tomorrow of next generations.
“The development initiative manly lead by architect and philanthropist Muzaffar Ali in association with architect Sultan Ahmad , architect Arshi Rafique, Architect Sana Javed, architect Riyan Habib, student architect Syed Haris Muaaz ,Mohammad Kashif and Anas Rafique social activist, community development practitioner, and welfare analyser.
