Urdu poet and Jamia Millia Islamia alumnus Asrar Jamayee is an iconic figure and needs no introduction, a report by Daud Arif.
However, his story of struggle had moved several alumni and university officials. University-floated GJAN issued an appeal urging alumni to contribute generously so that the money could be used to help Asarar Jamayee. OT.COM was the first portal to carry the report pointing out that the response was extremely poor.
But that was past as reports have surfaced that Jamia Alumni Chicago Chapter has provided 70000 INR ($1075) to the ailing 80-year-old poet Asrar.
The development has been welcomed with many strongly feeling that this would ease financial hardship of the Batla House bard who has a captive audience across the world and India.
Though his senior citizen pension that was cancelled years ago has been started again, the amount is still not enough to carry out his expenses.
“He is very weak nowadays and needs our support. Jamia Alumni Chicago Chapter will try its best to support Jamiaites in need. We are thankful to every alumnus who has contributed to this cause,” said an US-based alumnus in a message.
It is understood that the university will hand over the money to the poet in an event to be organised on the campus soon.
