Hyper local website okhlatimes.com scooped digital media award 2017 at an event held at Okhla on Thursday. The website offers ground breaking local news with the portal being followed by a few national dailies too.
Besides covering day-to-day news events of a deprived locality, okhlatimes.com focuses on human interest stories with some of its stories and videos also making to the mainstream media. The portal has been around for the last more than five years covering many milestone events of the locality and Jamia Millia Islamia that is also in the locality.
The award was given by Aseem Asha Foundation and collected by OT Contributing Editor Daud Arif.
“We are thankful to the Foundation for recognizing our work. Also, we wish the Foundation best luck in its endeavour to empower the marginalized through training,” said OT COO F A Khan.
This is not for the first time that the portal’s works have been praised. In 2011, the website was shortlisted for XCity London Award with four other global journalists. The award then was scooped by London-based Guardian Editor.
All these years, okhlatimes.com has been empowering the marginalized through digital inclusion and strengthening local governance. Its issue-led community journalist has several impact reports. A few years ago, okhlatimes.com had launched an online petition campaign in the locality for correcting the name of a freedom fighter mentioned on road signage.
With support from readers and Jamia alumni the portal was successful in getting the name corrected.
