Did Okhla MLA walk into police station unbidden? Why did cops refuse to arrest him?

Though speculations over arrest of Okhla AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan have been doing the rounds in Okhla since the complainant (Khan’s sister-in-law) had recorded her statement in Saket court regarding ‘sexual harassment’, it was only on Saturday when the MLA send messages to several journalists and even posted information on his timeline that he was going to surrender on Sunday.

He wrote: ““I want to tell everyone that police are trying to frame me on false charges and arrest me. I have requested police to give me a few days’ time because the situation in my constituency is worrying. Dengue is widespread here and it is important that I stay in my constituency now. I am overseeing the fogging operations but police insist that arresting me has become imperative. So I will surrender at the Jamia Nagar police station Sunday noon.”

And on Sunday her surrendered accompanied with several of his supporters. It is another story that after remaining in Jamia Nagar police station for hours, the cops refuse to arrest him. “We will not arrest him now. Whatever he is doing is of his own accord. We will go by our investigation,” a senior police officer said as reported by the PIT.

Did the MLA turn up into police station without being sought? This and other questions are being talked about now.

The Indian Express reported quoting a senior officer: “There is no arrest warrant and we have not asked him to surrender. If he wants to come and sit in the police station, he is most welcome, but that is not required. As our investigation proceeds, we will decide whether there is a need to arrest him.”

After coming out of the police station, Khan said they (police) didn’t arrest him due to “public pressure”.

However, senior police officials rubbished the charges.

A case under IPC sections 354(A)(sexual harassment), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) and 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) was registered against Amanatullah and the woman’s husband, reported PTI.

Khan has denied all these charges. He wrote on his timeline: “आज में दिल्ली पुलिस के बुलावे पर खुद अपनी गिरफ़्तारी देने के लिए जामिया नगर पुलिस थाने गया मेने थाने में अपनी बात पूरी मज़बूती से रखी, उनके पारिवारिक सम्बन्ध और सारे सबूत ,उसके तलाक के कागजात हमने पुलिस के सामने रखे सारे सुबूत देखने के बाद पुलिस ने कहा आप की गिरफ़्तारी करना मुनासिब नहीं है। अब पुलिस जमा किए गए कागज़ात की बुनियाद पर अब जाँच करेगी। जो उनको पहले करना चाहिए था। आज अवाम की पुलिस पर नाराज़गी साफ़ दिख रही थी । मेरे साथ विधायक दिनेश मोहनिया जी सही राम जी अवतार सिंह कालकाजी और अजय दत्त जी भी मौजूद थे”
