Okhla residents reject Jamaat-backed Moonis in MCD polls

When candidates for the MCD elections 2017 were being announced all eyes were on Moonis Ahmad, Welfare Party of India’s candidate from Abul Fazal Enclave. His importance was further enhanced after Jamaat-e-Islami (Hind) backed it. Moreover, he was also candidate of Ittehad Front, a political front with backing from several parties.

He couldn’t cross 1,000 votes.

However, the result of the poll has left many deeply upset as Moonis could not manage to sail through in the election.

His dismal performance only highlights the fact that Jamaat’s choice Moonis was rejected by voters in Abul Fazal Enclave.

Now when the results have been announced, AAP’s Wajid Khan has won the election followed by Congress Pervez Alam Khan, according to data available online.

Wajid got 10,374 votes with Pervez getting 6,127 votes, according to score sheet doing the rounds in locality.

The defeat of Moonis is being talked about in the locality. Moreover, it is interesting to point out that Moonis campaigned quietly by connecting with the local voters.

Welfare Party of India officer bearers could not be contacted for their comments. However, it is understood that the defeat will force the officials into introspection into what went wrong that the party could not even win one seat in Jamaat’s bastion as it has its headquarters in Abul Fazal Enclave.
