‘We condemn appointment of Najma Heptullah as Jamia Chancellor’

It appears that the appointment of Dr Najma Heptulla as new Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia after incumbent Lt Gen (Retd) MA Zaki completed his five-year term has not gone down well with some students of the university.

In a post, student leader Meeran Haider wrote: “We strongly condemn the appointment of Najma Heptullah (BJP Leader) as the Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Najma Heptullah is a BJP leader who will promote and implement saffron agenda in our university which is going to damage the secular credentials of our university. All Jamia Millia Islamia students.”

He further wrote: “We equally condemn JMI VC Talat Ahmad congratulatory statement on her appointment as the Chancellor of Jamia.

“Talat Ahmad, our VC has suppressed Students’ Union in JMI terming it to be a political activities while on the other hand he is accepting a RSS BJP backed leader as a Chancellor of JMI.

“This is a high time for everyone in Jamia to think seriously about the ongoing conspiracy being framed to damage the identity of Jamia.”

It was earlier in the day, when the university released a statement announcing that Governor of Manipur and former Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Dr Najma A. Heptulla has been unanimously elected as Chancellor (Amir-e-Jamia) of Jamia for five years by the University’s Court (Anjuman) in a special meeting held on May 25, 2017.

“The university will be greatly benefited from her rich experience in both political and public life. It will be our privilege to work with her and to learn from her distinguished career in Parliament and internationally,” said Jamia vice chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad.
