The report of Kannur girl who scored 1180/1200 in HSS exam commits suicide took many netizens by surprise. Also it sparked a debate after a report in a national daily quoting cops said that focus on her poor living conditions in media reports may have led to extreme act. However, some netizens said it could be lack of Islamic teaching too.
The jubilation in her family after Rafseena of Sivapuram Higher Secondary School in Maloor Village in Kannur scored a record 1,180 marks out of 1,200 in the higher secondary results published on Monday was short lived as they found hanging in her house at 4.45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Deccan Chronicle reported that in her suicide note she hinted at the fact that she was depressed by the reports of her poor background which she had hidden from her classmates, according to police.
Rafseena’s mother is a daily wage labourer and they were living in a single-room house with two siblings.
The post attracted a few comments too with one user writing: “Why was she ashamed of her poverty…she should be proud….today even the rich kids who r given luxuries by their parents do not score good marks and this girl, in spite of all the hardships could score such good result is to be applauded …poverty is not something to be ashamed of….”
Another user wrote: “With other studies, Islamic teaching is also important.” Committing suicide in Muslim is looked down. In Okhla such incidents were leas heard.
However, a few cases have surfaced in the last few years of girls committing suicide. A few months ago there was a report of an educated Jamia girl student committing suicide at her friend’s house in Shaheen Bagh. Many residents strongly feel that other than providing quality education to children they should also be told about what wrong and right so that they get prepared to fight tough conditions.
