A Mushaira organsied in memory of freedom fighter Ashfaqulla Khanat Jamia Millia Islamia by Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan on September 22 was a hit as large number of residents turned up to relish the moment.
However, the Mushaira quoted controversy in the locality with some activists and AIMIM members opposing it tooth and nail questioning the timing. The activists and AIMIM members argued that they were not against the Mushaira as such but the timing. They claimed that it was not the right time to hold such an event in Jamia Nagar that has been reeling under dengue deaths.
AIMIM members in large numbers event turned up outside to protest, demanding compensation of Rs 1 crore to kin of dengue victims. They had planned to submit memorandum to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who didn’t turn up. Moreover, an activist also claimed that he was thrashed for opposing Mushaira in Shaheen Bagh by AAP members, an allegation that has been denied by the MLA.
AIMIM leader Irfanullah Khan, an ex-AAP member, even addressed his members on Facebook live. Later on he wrote: “I would like to make an appeal to Delhi Govt with respect to the critical situation of Okhlaites, The entire region is suffering from the epidemic of dengue and chikungunya. As per locals 75 people have lost their life and forcing many to spend in thousands to save the life of their loved ones. It was expected from the Chief Minister/Health Minister to visit at least once to show their support…
“We are not against the cultural events, but when the entire region is mourning on the deaths of their loved ones, such programmes are like mocking the local people…”
