Protest against Metro fare hike: Jamia students invited to join stir

The hike in fares of Metro has not gone down well with many Delhiites with Left-wing groups holding protest. If on May 15, a protest was held outside the Delhi Metro Rail Corportaion office at Jantar Mantar demanding a roll back of the hike in fares, Left backed student group is planning to hold a protest at Metro Bhawan at Barakhamba Road on May 19.

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia too have been invited to join the protest. One user wrote this while sharing the poster: “Please join tomorrow. People from Jamia who wish to come along assemble at university bust stop by 10 am.” With examination going on chances are that many students would prefer staying away from the protest, said a source.

“There is mayhem among people because of the hike. The government has to revoke the hike. And also publicise the report of Fare Fixation Committee that recommended it,” Prashant Mukherjee, Delhi unit president of SFI had told earlier.

“There is a fare hike of 66 per cent. A common man has to shell out around Rs 4,000 per month alone for travel which is too high,” Mukherjee said.

Also, they raised a long-pending demand for issuance of concessional passes for students who travel on a regular basis. “We are planning to organise another protest on 22nd of this month in Barakhamba Road’s DMRC office,” Mukherjee had said then.
