There are many issues in Okhla that plague the locality. Of them the most burning issue that has left residents of Zakir Nagar deeply upset is the increasing influence of Mahdi or Maseeh movement. It is understood that the movement is gaining influence in the locality with some youths freely preaching the message of the controversial group in local mosques, according to local residents.
And to blunt their influence, said a resident, a group has been formed in Islah Masjid, Zakir Nagar. Residents pointed out that to end the increasing influence of Mahdi group in the locality some religious people have formed an office that was inaugurated weeks ago by an Ulema of Darul-u-Loom. Maulanas from Bulandsahar and other places came together on one platform to mull ways to end increasing influence of Mehdi.
A few months ago tension had brewed in the locality when a few Mehdi members had attacked a religious head of a mosque. Following which a fight also had taken place between two groups. Later on a large number of people had marched towards the local police station, demanding arrest of the members of Mehdi members. The incident had taken place before Ramzan last year.
Though no violence had taken place residents expressed anger over the turn of event. And things had settled down after a few Mehdi members were arrested.
