Former Jamia Millia Islamia student leader Shafiqur Rahman has taken a political plunge. He is RJD candidate from Okhla’s ward number 102S Abul Fazal Enclave. A realtor by profession, Rahman claims himself to be a social activist too. Like other candidates in his ward, Rahman had launched a slew of measures to win hearts and minds of voters.
He said some of his old university friends too have come forward to support him so that he sails through. Originally from Bihar’s Darbhanga, Rahman (who was at Jamia from 86 to 91) has been living in Delhi’s Okhla for the last more than 40 years and knows the locality very well.
In an exclusive interview with OT.COM, he talks about his plan to develop the locality. When asked reasons for contesting election, he said it was only after looking at the prevailing conditions of the locality that he decided to take a political plunge.
He said if voted power he would see that several burning issues, like education, health and cleanliness, of the locality get priority. Confident of a win, Rahman said he would work to add more green cover to the locality and address garbage issue. It is important to mention here that dumping up of garbage on roadsides is a major issue for the residents. The dumping of garbage near a local hospital on roadside for years has been a cause of concern for residents, who at times even launched peaceful protest to get things addressed.
Moreover, the locality also lacks in Government hospital an issue that Rahman has promised to address if voted to power in the April 23 MCD polls. (advertorial)
