Counting to the elections held for three new municipalities of Delhi on Sunday 15 has begun. And within hours the results will be out. In Okhla there is palpable tension where candidates and residents are waiting with bated breath for the results. The area grabbed headlines after terror accused Zia-Ur-Rahman took a plunge into the fray. Since then many media houses and journalists flocked the area for the first time to gauge residents’ mood. If we go by some media reports and local analysts Congress candidates are doomed in both the wards 205 and 206. However, jumping to conclusion at this stage will be suicidal. For residents a new councilor may bring in new hope to the locality. Deeply upset with the sitting councilors, who did little for the locality, many residents opted for a new face. But it is not known who will be the new councilor. Confusion had prevailed in the locality till the last moment on voting day also with record number of candidates contesting the elections. In women reserved ward of Abul Fazal Enclave (206) some 27 women tested their luck. Most of them spent huge sums to garner support from residents. One candidate in Zakir Nagar ward number 205 spent around Rs 4 lakh only on mushaira. Obsessed with winning, he even gathered some Maulanas to recite duas for his victory throughout the day. Reports have surfaced that even some candidates took loan to fight elections. So what will happen to them if they don’t win? This election was boon for middlemen and Urdu newspapers that had a field day. All told residents will be looking forward to a councilor who is devoted to developmental work in the locality that is in tatters. Will they get a councilor of their choice?
