SP's Beghum defeats Cong, BJP in Abul Fazal EnclaveOT, April 17, 2012 12:41 IST Okhla Times Team The elections to Okhla ward number 206 is out. In the final fight, Samajwadi Party's Ishrat Beghum has defeated her nearest second BJP candidate Babli Sethi. She got 8546 votes; Congress candidate got more than 5000 votes with the BJP at the third position. Till early morning the BJP candidate was in the lead. But results started going in favour of Ameeruddin's wife Ishrat Beghum after counting of Shaheen Bagh started. Beghum took the lead and won the nail biting final. With this, SP and Congress have managed their seats in both the wards. The sitting Congress councilor Engineer Jamaluddin’s wife has been defeated. In 2007 election, Jamaluddin had got 3513 votes. And it appears that this time he has failed to get support from the residents. Beghum had an upper hand from day one as her husband Ameeruddin, who earlier had fought election on CPI ticket, did some work in the area. For the last one year he concentrated in Shaheen Bagh. Also, he got the road of G Block AFE repaired. Md Tajuddin, who voted for Beghum, with his whole family members, said: "I am happy that a deserving candidate has won. This is good for the locality. I want that Jahan continues with her development work and change the area." Abul Fazal Enclave resident Nuzhat Ara, who also voted for Beghum, was extremely happy that her candidate won. She said: "This only shows that there is still room for candidates who work. My appeal is tht she makes real change in the area. I am sorry for other candidates. Had they done some work, thew would have given a tough competition to Jahan." Overall the BJP has taken a big lead in Delhi municipal elections. The BJP win in the MCD has sparked a debate whether anti-Congress feeling is sweeping the country. The ruling party’s bad days continue with defeat coming in Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai and Punjab. In the recently held Mumbai Municipal Corporation, the Congress had to taste defeat against Shiv Seva-BJP combine.
