When Alama Shibli Numani Road in Abul Fazal Enclave (AFE) was widened, Arif Khan was happy that the traffic congestion would be the thing of the past. Other residents also realized that their hardship of travelling on the narrow road to Shaheen Bagh would come to an end soon. But this didn’t happen. Within a few weeks after the road was built, new car and bike workshops came up. Today the road is lined by such workshops. Khan said: “We had thought that traffic jam would be over with the widening of the road, but the opposite has happened as workshops occupy half the road. The empty spaces on the left and right side of the road are occupied by workshops.”
Since the population explosion in the locality, such workshops have come fast on roadside.
AFE-based resident Md Nayyar said: “Workshops are creating nuisance. As you enter AFE from right side of the police station you can see the workshops everywhere. The biggest problem is that because of them the road has been narrowed as most of the workshop owners park their vehicles on the road.”
Many residents are deeply concerned with the fast coming up of workshops on the road. “Many illegal activities are taking place in these workshops. But many residents don’t object to them as they get their vehicles repaired close to their houses,” said Nayyar.
The situation is such that even women don’t feel comfortable to walk on the footpath as it is occupied by the workshops and busy most of the time. Some cases of eve-teasing have also surfaced with most of the mechanics being young. Some residents are of the firm opinion that these workshops working illegally on the road should be regularized and they should not be allowed to park vehicles on the road creating problem for others.

sunil Posted on 6.13.2011 at 3:40:14 Sir, congratulation for rising very important local issue, that make you site different from other website.
if local MLA wish this nuisance will be over within a days, he can make goddy goddy statements but when it comes to implementation he will not do it as he is also getting benefit from all these trouble. leaders know that general public supports need for vote only which is required at the time of election which comes once in 5 years.
There is clear ruling from Delhi High court that no workshop or any commercial activity is allowed in residencial area, no matter these area is regularised colony or not. And local police should take action on it and municipal authority will help in this.
So dont praise MLA, ask him and point out his responsibilty or wait for a major incidet to happen to make another news.

Aftab Khan Posted on 6.13.2011 at 3:41:36 I also agree on the issue raised. It's really not safe to travel on the road also road side. The road side space has been occupied by the workshop owners and it narrowed the space. The auto driver and bikers are also risk for the footpath passers and we see the accident time to time.
The authorities and society should take note of this and take some hard steps to get the occupied space vacant.

K. Mustafa Posted on 6.13.2011 at 4:15:56 Right, Br.Ahmed! Situation is worse than described, as these people take such things as their rights e.g. Sheeba tent house of N42 who did not vacate even after the order issued by SDM in Jan 11. If it is brought to authorities or at least to through okhla times to http://www.grahakseva.com/

Ali Posted on 6.13.2011 at 5:32:35 I appreciate you for this news, but i think you should have mentioned another main reason also, roads and streets of Abul Fazal Enclave and Shaheen Bagh are blocked by the builders and building material suppliers by putting building materials on road. It seems that police and MCD official don't bother while general public is suffering and nobody has to do anything to stop it. Either it is MLA, Councillor or police nobody is doing their duty.
but the builders and local police is also responsible for the same.
