As the temperature touches low the worst hit are the poor and daily wagers. At 9 PM on a chilly December 19 night when many people are in their house warming themselves up in front of heater, impoverished Mukhtar Ali pedaled his way to next destination. He is carrying a passenger to Batla House from Abul Fazal Enclave so that he could make some money.

This is not the end of the journey. A homeless man he will have a difficult time at night. To warm himself he may burn waste as he hits the bed on a pavement or a small hut somewhere in the locality. He is not alone. There are many like him for whom arrival of freezing winter is going through hard times.

Wrapped in a huge chaddar with his head covered, he says: “Life is difficult. For us winter brings misery. We have no other option but to continue with our work. If we don’t work we won’t be able to earn our livelihood.”

A resident of West Bengal, he and his many friends drive rickshaw in the locality to earn their livelihood. After paying the rent to their owner they end up earning only enough to survive on the basic food.

With Gramin plying on the roads of Jamia Nagar many rickshaw pullers have moved to other areas as making money has become difficult with most of the passengers too opting for quick and cheap journey.
