MAY 8, 2011: Some 200 local residents turned up at a rally to protest the fast coming up incinerator at Okhla. The peaceful rally that started at around 5 P.M from Jamia School went on till 7 P.M. For some 30 minutes protesters, including young, elderly and all representatives of RWA, blocked the main Mathura road, throwing traffic out of gear. For the first time local MLA Asif Md Khan also participated in the rally. He told OKHLA TIMES: “I am participating in the rally to give support to the local residents. There is fear that the gas coming out of the huge plant is certainly going to harm people. We have to chalk out strategies to convince the government about the harm of this plant.”

Activist Asha Arora said: “The protest was successful. It is good to see that people know have started realizing that this plant is dangerous to their health and thus have come out to protest.”

Okhla tank resident Devraj Bhadana, who is also Delhi Jal Board (DJB) union general secretary, was also part of the rally. He said: “We will not allow the plant to come on this site. We will continue the protest until the government stops work at the plant.”

Jawed Iqbal Khan said: “The march against Okhla waste to energy power plant gives an opportunity to the locals to lodge their protest to the government that they are not in favour of the plant.”

Residents strongly feel that the plant is hazardous. However, the government is not willing to address their concern. It claims that the local residents are not well placed to decide whether the plant is hazardous.
