Three people, including a young girl child, died in a fire that broke out at Dhobi Ghat, Batla House, around 3 AM on October 29. The main reason of the fire is not known but some locals said the fire started from a short circuit or candle or mosquito coil. As many people as many versions. The police too are clueless and are looking for the main cause of the fire. Till the time fire brigade reached the spot at about 6 AM some 20 huts were turned into ashes.

More than seven people, who sustained life-threatening injuries, are being treated at a nearby Holy Family hospital. A resident Abdus Sattar said had the fire brigade reached on time the casualties would have been avoided. Such incidents are common in the locality with fire taking place on and off in the huts, claimed Sattar.

Local MLA Asif Mohammad Khan, who rushed to the area, announced a compensation of Rs 2,500 to the deceased families. Police constables also reached the spot on time to assess the damage.

Saleem Usman, RWA Abul Fazal Enclave, who also visited the spot, said: “Most of the people who suffered from the fire are poor.”

When the news of the fire spread in the locality several residents rushed to provide help. They used water to douse the fire until the fire brigade reached belatedly. But they were unable to save the lives.
