No water boring without permission?

The buzz in Okhla is that from now onwards residents have to take permission from police before beginning boring for groundwater. The order was implemented a few days ago when boring materials were seized by local policemen.

Reports have surfaced that the police swung into action following orders from top officials. Many residents had welcomed the move. They strongly feel that illegal boring also leads to many problems like the road being broken and street being blocked for days. Also excessive boring will further lead to water table depleting.

But some fear that the new rules only mean extra income for the local officials.

For a few days there was a blanket ban on boring in the locality. But once again things have gone back to normal with many residents getting boring done outside their houses.

A resident, who wants to hide his identity, said: “I paid a small amount to the police to get new boring done. Earlier, water was easily available. One has to dig more than 100 feet to get water.”

Mushrooming of houses, population explosion and dearth of government agencies are attributed to the water table going down in the area like other areas in Delhi.

Despite being located on the bank of River Yamuna, water is a big issue in the locality with no government supply. The area being unauthorized it is also neglected by the government. And local politicians who come to power on tall promises do little to improve the situation.
