Okhla Head, the venue where team Anna key member Arvind Kejriwal was to address residents on July 7 at about 6 PM to drum up support for the proposed indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, was well decked up. Supporters of all ages flocked to the spot since afternoon, carrying flags.

Security too was beefed up in and around the area.

Everything went on as scheduled until Kejriwal arrived. As he started to address the audience, a local youth leader Faraz Khan asked Kejriwal to clarify his and Team Anna’s stand against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders.

Zakir Nagar resident Faraz said it was after this that Kejriwal’s supporters tried to silence him and a scuffle took place. Police was quick to act as the “dissenters” were whisked away from the spot and the meeting continued.

Faraz said: “I don’t understand why his followers got upset by my question. Kejriwal didn’t reply to my question of why his group was only targeting Congress leaders over graft cases. Why are they not raising their voices against Modi and other BJP leaders? This only shows that the group is working for some political party, the RSS. Also, there is no Muslim in Anna’s core committee.”

He said the pamphlets that were circulated in the locality only had names of Congress leaders.

Kejriwal continued his attack on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Pranab Mukherjee, UPA presidential candidate, and other senior ministers were attacked. The BJP was also criticized of playing double game on the issue of passage of a strong Lokpal Bill.

“Congress and BJP are playing a double game. BJP also does not want the Lokpal bill to be passed. BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had talked about giving CBI independence. But at the time of moving amendments, they did not bring any amendment to this affect. It shows their double standards,” he told the gathering.

The meeting came to an end on a positive note with Kejriwal being optimistic that the Team would get permission to hold to hold indefinite fast from July 25 against the UPA government. Reports have surfaced that Team Anna has been given permission to hold indefinite fast in Delhi.
