When Maqsood Ahmed, a local Batla House resident and trader, collapsed just outside the Batla House graveyard on September 29 at about 6:30 AM he was rushed to a nearby Holy Family Hospital.  Doctors there declared him brought dead. A passerby, who saw Ahmed collapse like a heap of cards on the road, says: “I had gone to the bus stop with my school going son and while returning I saw a healthy man falling on the road. I rushed to pick him up. But as he was unconscious we put him into a cab to take him to Holy Family hospital.”

Other residents had also rushed to help 56-year-old Ahmed, who owned a popular sweet shop located on the right handside of Batla House entrance that is always chock-a-block with Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students and other residents.

Ahmed’s young son Imran Khan, who is now looking after the family business established by his father 40 years ago, says: “He was fine and had no health issues. By the time he was taken to the hospital my father was dead. On that day he had gone to offer a short prayer at his mother’s grave in Batla House.”

According to a rough estimate, many residents in the area suffer from heart ailments due to poor and sedentary life style.
