Half a million people and a few ATMs

MAY 2, 2011: It is 8 P.M. and there is a long queue outside the Axis Bank ATM at Okhla Head on May 1. Some twenty people are waiting for their turn in the sweltering heat to take out money from the only functional ATM. The other two ATMs nearby have stopped working. A Batla House resident Nasir Ali Khan said: “Taking out money from the ATM is a difficult job with a few ATMs in the locality not working most of the time.” Others have also the same story to narrate.

Residents are not happy with the tough time they have to go through while taking out money from the ATM. Many prefer to go to the Community Centre, located a few kilometers from Okhla as most of the ATMs are not so overcrowded there.

Khan said the other two ATMs at Okhla go haywire most of the time as the air condition doesn’t work. “There is no one to take care of these machines. Just see the AC is not working here also.” But at least he was lucky to take out the money after half an hour wait. On some days residents have to wait for long to get money out from ATM.

A few years back things were extremely bad with no banks having their ATMs in the locality, according to Abul Fazal Enclave resident Abdul Raquib. He too was standing in the queue. He said: “Things have changed now as many banks have installed ATMs in the locality. It is another story that most of them stop working from time to time. A lot of people use these machines here. We need more ATMs in the locality.”

We need more ATMs in the locality. Amen to that.

The distribution of wealth is not uniform. Fine, that is understandable in a democratic country like India. But why is the distribution of services not uniform. We all are paying our taxes and doing our jobs as well as others, no matter what the job is. Another thing is lack of maintenance. I have rarely been able to withdraw money from Okhla ATMs since most of the time they have no cash. Very appropriate title - Half a million people and a few ATMs.
