Groundwater levels show sharp fallOT, June 1, 2012 13:53 IST Okhla Times Reporter/Okhla Residents of Jamia Nagar are deeply concerned by the decrease in groundwater in the locality. The soaring temperature and drying of River Yamuna have led to the water table steadily decreasing. In Abul Fazal Enclave alone, many residents have started new boring so as to get water. Till now no survey has been done in the locality to gauge the actual status of ground water table. However, plumbers who are involved in boring have confirmed that now they have to go deeper to get water than earlier. Sarfaraz Ahmed, a plumber, said: “With temperature going up and Yamuna drying up, we have to dig deeper to get the water.” Illegal and access boring have also played havoc with the water table. With officials not visible in the locality, anybody can go for boring as they don’t have to take permission of the officials. Also, population explosion and construction of new buildings are taking its toll on the water level. A resident Nasimur Rahman said this was waiting to happen. “The condition can get worse with illegal boring reaching a new height. Moreover, there has been a population explosion. In one house where there used to reside one family now a flat has come up and more than five families are living in that place. The water need of residents has increased manifold. And when they don’t get water they have an easy option and it is to get new boring.” Jamia Nagar is not the only area that is faced with such a problem. Other parts of Delhi are also having the same problem. In NOIDA, officials are worried as groundwater in the area is decreasing steadily. They blame the increasing population, soaring temperature and pollution for the problem. The only way out is water harvesting. Though the Uttar Pradesh and Greater NOIDA authorities are thinking on this seriously, in Okhla there is no such plan on the anvil. With the colony being unauthorized now it is up to the residents, RWA, and leaders to decide what steps to take to arrest the decrease in groundwater.
