First monsoon spell chokes OkhlaOT, July 7, 2012 04:54 IST Okhla Times Reporter/Okhla The first pre-monsoon showers on Friday evening in Delhi brought reprieve from searing heat for residents. But at the same time it threw the city out of gear with traffic snarl everywhere. People returning from offices had a horrid time in some parts of the locality as they got stranded for hours. The worst hit was Jamia Nagar area with most of the streets overflowing with water. Above all, power also played truant throughout the night. As rain lashed the city, children and youngsters were seen taking bath in the shower. But residents had problem with water logging in the area. Till morning water was logged in many streets. Batla House resident Najma said the rain will bring its own problem. “It is good to see that the temperature has come down. But we are also prepared for other problems like water logging and mosquito breeding.” Shaheen Bagh was inundated and many residents fear that in the coming days things would deteriorate further. The open nallah is the biggest headache. With local leaders least interested in developmental work, residents have left things to their fate.
All told, many residents hit social networking site Facebook expressing happiness over late arrival of monsoon. RLD Delhi Pradesh general secretary Javed Iqbal Khan said: “Every year rain brings in many problems for the locals. Something needs to be done. If the authorities are not doing anything, residents and RWAs should come forward to address the issue.” Other parts of Delhi too were hit by rain with water logging and traffic jams being the biggest worry.
