Young Jawed Ali (name changed) was happy that within days he would be visiting Middle East to join his new employer. But his dream was shattered as he met with an accident on Abul Fazal Enclave road one fateful night. He sustained life threatening injuries and his leg had to be amputated. Now young and highly-talented Ali is recuperating at his home. The accident was not his fault as a high-speed moving van hit his bike from behind one day, says a source close to the family.
Such accidents are increasing on narrow Okhla roads where everybody is in a hurry to reach his/her destination, throwing traffic norms to the wind. A doctor of a local private hospital informs OKHLA TIMES on the condition of anonymity that weekly he attends to some two road accident victims.
With explosion of population and vehicles, Okhla roads have turned unsafe for commuters. Youngsters driving two and four wheelers with high speed endanger others life also. The plying of Gramin Seva has also created chaos on the roads.
It is not only Okhla roads that have turned risky but road fatalities over all in 2011 increased in Delhi with some 2,000 deaths, according to latest police report. The Delhi police data released recently tell the story of deaths on Delhi roads. In 2011 road accidents went up to 7281 from 7260 in 2010. Till now all government’s efforts to check the casualties have failed to yield positive results.
Now the Delhi traffic police department is planning to amend the Motor Vehicle Act so that traffic violators are harshly penalized and cases of road accidents are minimized.
