Keeping an eye on the Assembly elections 2013, the Congress that was uprooted in the recently held trifurcated municipal corporation of Delhi elections has decided to go for developmental works to keep its support base intact. Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has asked the urban development department to initiate development work in illegal colonies ASAP. There are some 65 illegal colonies in Delhi with a huge population. Ironically, the conditions in these colonies are pathetic as they lack in basic amenities like sewage, drinking water and paved roads. It is understood that the move is going to certainly benefit some illegal colonies of Okhla also. Despite getting provisional regularization authorization certificate, Abul Fazal Enclave, Shaheen Bagh and some areas of Batla House are yet to get full recognition. And hence these areas are the most neglected. In the MCD polls candidates had contested elections on developmental issues. Now with the Delhi government itself taking the decision to uplift these colonies, works for many winning candidates would be easy. According to official sources and reports published in some national dailies, Sheila in a meeting with urban development minister AK Walia and other senior officials on Thursday gave them her blueprint how to improve these colonies. She said: “We have decided that work must start immediately towards unauthorized colonies at least in the 65 colonies where most related problems pertaining to technicalities have been sorted out. The work has to be continued where there are no problems.” Unauthorized colonies were at the centre of attraction before 2008 Assembly elections. At that time the Congress government had distributed authorization certificates some colonies out of the 1,600 illegal colonies where some 40 lakh people reside. The move had helped the Congress to make a comeback for the second time in Delhi. And now it appears that illegal colonies have again provided the Congress party an opportunity to make a comeback after the drubbing in the municipal polls. Post a comment | ||||||||||||||||||
