When work to broaden the Abul Fazal road towards Kalindi Kunj had started a few days ago, residents had heaved a sigh of relief. They were happy that a wide road would help bring an end to traffic snarl.

But even as work continues some residents are skeptical whether they would be able to drive their vehicles on the new road as it continues to be occupied by kabari wallahs. Throughout the day, the empty roadside space is occupied by private buses and trucks. Besides, many trees and electricity polls on the road are yet to be removed.

Atif Md said the whole effort to broaden the road will fail if encroachment is not removed. “There are many hurdles in way to take a smooth ride on this road once it is paved. What will happen to the poles and trees that are on the road?”

Interestingly, the road is being paved with trees and electricity poles on the middle. Till now no effort has been made to remove them.

RLD Delhi Pradesh general secretary Javed Iqbal Khan said until and unless a permanent solution to these things is found the road will be unused. “Permission should be taken from the forest department to shift the trees to the corner. Electric poles and other hindrances should also be removed.”

With nothing like this taking place, some residents fear that it would turn out to be just like the Maulana Shibli road on Shaheen Bagh. Since this narrow road has been broadened, it has been occupied by encroachers like workshops. Some part of the area has been turned into a parking lot with elderly and youth sitting in the evening.
