Abul Fazal Enclave outer road being widenedOT, April 25, 2012 12:17 IST Okhla Times Reporter/AFE On the night of April 24 at about 11 PM a few rickshaws are plying on the Kalindi Kunj road. Most of the people are on their way to their homes after a hectic day work. But a few men are engrossed in their work outside MLA Asif Md Khan’s swanky office where once tall trees stood. The greenery is gone and workers are busy filling the ground with mud that is being brought in by trucks. Some three trucks are involved in the work that is going on in full speed. The labourers are in a hurry and they don’t have time to talk to strangers. Since Rs 6 crore has been sanctioned, the work to widen the road is going on in speed. Overnight posters have appeared as usual in the locality claiming that the MLA got the money sanctioned for turning the road into two lanes. Through the posters, MLA’s supporters have thanked Khan for the development work. Residents are happy that this will ease out traffic snarl on the road. But some are apprehensive. They fear that once the road is widened, it again will be occupied by workshop and shopkeepers selling second hand items. Nadeem Ahmed said it is good to see that the MLA is doing some work. “But I fear that whether it will help in easing traffic jams on the road that of late has become extremely busy with many people from Noida also using the short-cut route to Delhi. Once the roads are made, the shopkeepers must not be allowed to encroach half of the road. The best thing would be to have a divider on the road. This will certainly stop encroachment.” Many a time the cops have been found removing the items placed on the roads. But after a week things turn out to be normal with shopkeepers encroaching the road. And because of which it has become difficult to move on the road at rush hours. The encroachment has led to many accidents also on the road. The situation is such that many DTC bus drivers don’t want to come to this area. A conductor of a DTC bus said: “Because of encroachment the road has been narrowed and it is extremely difficult to drive on the road. Even if the road is widened it won’t make a lot of difference. Residents should try to remove encroachment.” Till now residents and RWA members have failed to get any positive results as the shopkeepers are local and have muscle powers. At night time many small truck owners also use the free space to park their vehicles. Of late some eateries too have come up on roadside. These hotels are chock-o-block at evening with owners placing chairs on the road. Many residents park their vehicles on the road to feast on delicacies unaware of the fact that their irresponsible acts lead to traffic snarl and inconvenience to other residents.
