72-yr-old frail Jamila calls police after son throws her out of house

Jamila Beghum called police on Saturday night after her only son booted her out of a family house in E block of Abul Fazal Enclave. The 72-year-old Beghum was seen complaining to the police about her son who doesn’t respect her.  

She told OKHLA TIMES that how after the death of her elder son in an accident a few years ago life changed for her for good. “Asif always misbehave with me. And today he forced me out of the house after a minor altercation.”

The son was not available for comment. As the police arrived he ran away to safety, claimed residents, who had assembled on the spot. Visibly upset, Beghum recounted the abuse at her son’s hand.

Later on the police took Beghum to her 50 gaz house and promised to come back to settle the matter.

Vipin Tomer took down the complaint and said: “It is sad to know that the son is misbehaving in Ramzan.”

A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said: “The house is in mother’s name and fighting takes place on and off.”

They blamed the son for not behaving well with her mother. “He has picked up some bad habits and always fight with his mother,” said another neighbour.

Cases of elderly abuse in Delhi have increased. A survey has revealed that some 30 per cent of elders face abuse in Delhi. Neglect and disrespect have been cited as the most common forms of abuse, according to the report. Surprisingly in 60 per of the cases, son is responsible for the abuse than the daughter-in-law.
