The Indian youth Congress has started distributing I-cards to its news youth members from Taimoor Nagar Choupal. Identity-card distribution 2012 drive will go on for a few more days, according to youth Congress leader.

Nearly 6,500 Congress members will get their I-cards, claimed Mohd Faraz Khan, president Okhla Vidhan Sabha Indian Youth Congress.

The youth membership drive that was unrolled in December 2011 has been a huge hit in the locality with more youth coming to the Congress fold. Khan said: “We are happy with the membership drive. In two months we worked hard and our efforts yielded positive results. Now the time has come to distribute the cards to these members.”

A resident between the age group of 18 and 35 can become Congress youth member by paying Rs 15 membership fees. But the fee was exempted this year in Okhla thanks to local leader Faraz Khan.

He said: “We didn’t ask for any fee from members. Our sole aim is to increase our base in the locality and we welcome these youths to the Congress fold. They are part of a family.”

Congress is the only political party that has a huge following in the locality.

In the recent assembly elections, Congressman Shoeb Danish was able to win his councilor seat for the second time despite all odds against him. It is another story that in Ward number 206, a woman reserved seat, sitting councilor Engineer Jamaluddin’s wife failed to win the hearts and minds of voters. Despite the setback, she anyhow managed to bag second position to the winning SP candidate.

Member of Parliament (MP) Sandeep Dikshit is also a Congressman.

It would be interesting to see whether in the Delhi Assembly election 2013, Congress candidate will be able to topple sitting MLA Asif Md Khan, who is fast losing his popularity in the locality with many residents alleging that he reneged on some his promises to develop the area.
