Delhi CM Kejriwal gives Mushaira in Okhla a miss; AIMIM stages protest

The Mushaira called in memory of freedom fighter Ashfaqullah Khan by Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan grabbed headlines in the locality today. High drama unfolded outside Jamia Millia Islamia where the Mushaira was held with Asaduddin Owaisi’s members turning up in modest numbers to protest the holding of the Mushaira at a time when several people have died of dengue in Okhla.

“We had turned up with other supporters and members to hand over memorandum to Arvind Kejriwal, who was expected to visit the spot, but he didn’t turn up. Despite this, we peacefully protested as announced earlier and ended the demonstration after coming to know that Kejriwal will not come. Security was stepped up in and around Jamia and we were not allowed to move from a certain point,” said AIMIM member Afzal Ansari.

The peaceful protest was held under the leadership of Irfan Ullah Khan, former AAP member who had contested for MLA elections on AAP ticket losing to Asif Md Khan of the Congress. Since the date of the Mushaira was announced it attracted controversy with several activists and AIMIM members opposing it questioning the timing.

An activist claimed that he too was beaten up in Shaheen Bagh for opposing the Mushaira. AMIM even sent a memorandum to the Delhi CM urging him to announced Rs 1 crore compensation to kin of people who died of dengue and then enjoy Mushaira.

“We are not opposing the Mushair. What we are against is the timing of the Mushaira at a time when the deprived locality is reeling under vector-borne diseases with several people been reported to have died due to the deadly dengue,” said Khan.

On the other hand Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan said we did all even fogging in the locality to address the situation.
