Workshop to throw light on human rights & ethics education

Human Rights Programme, Department of Political Science and Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia is going to organize a Workshop on “Human Rights & Ethical Education” from January 18-25, 2012 at Tagore Hall, Dayar-e Mir Taqi Mir, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

The workshop intends to focus on Human Rights Based Approaches with the aim of building capacities and understanding the human rights framework and its linkages to develop work through a participatory approach. It will seek to provide space for participants for knowledge sharing, discussions, group activities using popular educational modules and encourage a tolerant culture to diversity regardless of religion, social status, and gender, according to university release.

The interactive workshop sessions will discuss Human Rights and Practice, Violence and Social Inclusion from the perspective of: Propagation of Human Rights and human development: Education and Human; Rights, Right to Food, Right to adequate Housing, Right to Information, IPR; (Intellectual Property Rights), Visible symbols etc and Social Inclusion: LGBT, Differently-abled, Dalits, Under privileged.

Other important topics to be discussed include child rights: Early Childhood, Rights of the Child etc; Women’s Rights: Violence, Sexual Harassment etc; Conflict Regions: North East, Kashmir, Gujarat; Gandhi , Human Rights and Violence; Practice of Religion and Human Rights: Baha’i, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism; Environment & Ecology: Biodiversity, Global Warming, Climate change, Sustainable Development & Carrying capacity, Environmental Degradation & Pollution (Land, Air, Water) and science and Access to Rights: Biotechnological developments (Foeticide, Surrogate Parenting, cloning, IVF, GMO amongst others), life-sustaining technology (organ transplant & sale, performance augmenting drugs etc), Against Torture, Euthanasia

The resource persons are from myriad fields – Law, NGO’s, Development Sector, Academic amongst others — participating in the workshop would use different pedagogical tools beyond lectures.

Presentations, Buzz and larger group discussions, role play, panel discussions, and other interactive exercises like Brain storming, OHP Presentations, group activities will be undertaken. Relevant short films will be screened with an interactive discussion woven around it, claimed the media coordinator.
