Why are Jamia passouts going through this?

It was in April of 2010 when 34-year-old Shaid Jamal residence of Mau applied for Basic Teaching Certificate course (BTC) in Uttar Pradesh. Armed with a graduation degree, he had expected to be selected. But when his candidacy was rejected he was devastated. The Principal D.I.E.T. Mau Nath Bhanjan district Mau U.P. turned down his application form on the basis that his Class 10 certificate issued by the Jamia Higher Secondary School was not valid. Since then he has been approaching officials in JMI to look into his case.

He told OKHLA TIMES: “The principal rejected the form and D.M. Mau U.P. has also approved his decision. It was in July 2010 that I had emailed my particulars to the JMI Vice Chancellor and registrar, but couldn’t get any response from them.  Though later on the registrar send me a fax writing that the University degree is valid, but it has not worked.”

Jamal has now approached the HC. But the problem is that the government lawyer is not entertaining his case, claimed Jamal. However, he is confident that things would be sorted out soon. This is not one-off incident with JMI students. OKHLA TIMES spoke to some alumni to find out whether they too faced such a problem in their career.

Md Shuja said he had a tough time in 2004 when he appeared in the interview of Rajasthan Public Service Commission. He said: “Some clerks objected to his degree. They were alarmed at seeing something written in Urdu on the certificate. But I insisted that Jamia being a Central University its degree is recognized. For two hours I was distraught. Then I approached some senior officials who accepted the certificate.”

After a heated debate he was allowed to appear in the interview. He said such things happen but one should not get discouraged. “I think it happens more of ignorance. In states like Rajasthan and Haryana clerks and officials don’t read Urdu and hence they think that JMI is a madarsa.”

The same happened with another alumnus, an MSC Physics student. Questions were raised on his certificate when he had appeared for lecturer interview in Haryana. His candidacy was rejected. “They rejected the certificate on the ground that there was no mention of MSC Physics on the certificate. JMI issues MSC Material Science, an upgrade degree that is equivalent to MSC Physics. This degree has more market value, but still it was not accepted. Jamia students are harassed,” said a source on the condition of anonymity.

There are many such cases in which JMI students have been asked to prove the authenticity of their certificate. The appointment letter of Shafique Md was withheld for three months by a government department. He was asked to prove that his MA Geography degree was equivalent to the MA from Krukshetra University. “It was hard times as I had to approach the JMI authorities to give me a letter pointing out the fact about my degree. It took me three months to get things cleared. JMI authorities were cooperative with me and I was lucky to convince the officers.”

He suggested a few changes in the certificate like mentioning the degree in English also. The degrees issued from JMI are in Urdu and hence the problem. Of late JMI authorities have taken some positive steps to address these issues.

(Okhla Times is documenting such incidents. If you – or you know of anyone – who has gone through such a problem, please email us at: greenokhla@gmail.com so that we can raise the issue with the concerned departments and the Jamia authorities.)

Shame on Jamia Authorities for not helping students...What is the Legal cell of Jamia doing if not fight the battles (in court) for all such incidents.

The incidents like these are very unfortunate and this seems to be partly due to ignorance and partly intentional harassment. The solution is issuing Certificates in Urdu and English Together. Like my degree of BE from Jamia is issued in Urdu and English and so i never faced any such problem. Jamia shall take corrective measures in issuing certificates, so that incidence like these could have been avoided.

JMI authorities must file petition against such activities of state governments and all such institutions. It is full responsibility of JMI Office bearers, very specially relating to Registerar office and Legal cell of the university to see the problems of the students passed out from JMI relating to degrees and certificates. The officers do not cooperate in practical way but in words (how will they not do and why they will not do etc). Now the JMI old boys have to come forward and they will do like minority status of JMI.
