Rs 1138 Aakash tablet is New Year gift for Jamia studentsOT, January 2, 2012 08:50 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI Students enrolled in various courses at Central University Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) can avail the Central government scheme of laying their hands on subsidized Aakash tablet (a lost cost computing cum access device) for a price of Rs 1,138. A letter has been addressed to the Vice Chancellor that has also been dispatched to Heads of various departments informing them about the tablet and scheme. Launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on October 5, 2011, the tablet will be circulated in other educational institutions including JMI on a subsidized price. The letter asks the University to prepare a list of all students who intend to purchase the most-talked about tablet. “The list should be forwarded to FTK Centre for Information and Technology for further compilation latest by January 18,” claims the letter. It is understood that once the work is completed the ministry will dispatch the tablets to the campus to be distributed. However, no date of distribution is mentioned. Being termed as the cheapest yet world over, it went on sale online on December 15. There was a huge rush of enthusiasts to purchase it and within days it was all booked with the manufacturer asking buyers to wait till January 2012. The upgraded version of the tablet also known as UbiSlate comes equipped with Android 2.3 and can be booked through the official website by forking out Rs 2,999. The tablet has turned out to be all the rage has a resistive touch screen. With an internal memory of 2 GB, 256 MB of RAM, the upgrade version has also other features including Cortex A8-700 MHz processor and graphics accelerator HD video processor. Other than these features it is also equipped with USB port, 3.5 mm audio jack and a 7 inch display. All said it has 800 x 480 pixel resolution and GPRS and WiFi support. Also, users will be available to connect as it would function as a mobile phone with internet facility available at Rs 99 for 2 GB.
