A meeting of student and local leaders was organized at a Jamia Nagar resident on September 8, urging Delhi University students of the locality to participate in the Delhi University Students’ Union Election and vote for NSUI candidates, the Congress’ student wing. The event managed by some former students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and Delhi University where election is going on witnessed a huge crowd that was addressed by Congress Member of Parliament Oscar Fernandes and others.

During more than half an hour programme held at a house nearby Tikona Park at about 8 PM, a few speakers also raised the issue of students’ election in JMI. A student leader Zia urged the MP to raise the election issue with Jamia Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung.

Fernanades asked students to vote for NUSU candidates so that they could win. “This election is not only about DU but is about strengthening secularism in the country. The NSUI win will be a slap on the faces of those elements who want to divide the country.” Also, Fernandes assured Jamia students that he would take up the election issue with the authorities soon.

Addressing the students, activist and Aligarh alumnus Javed Iqbal Khan said: “Such events remind me of my college days when we used to participate in elections. It is important that DU students should turn in huge numbers at the booths and make sure to vote for NSUI candidates.”

Former MLA Parvez Hashmi’s son also addressed the gathering.

Organizers were Ashu Khan, Waseem Khan, Asif Jah, Professor Salahuddin and others.
