No takers for SIO demand to sack professor

SIO is trying its best to convince students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) not to let Professor Prahalad K. Basu saga die. Some die-hard SIO activists, who are also JMI students, were seen distributing pamphlets and the press release that they had issued following the Professor Basu outburst against JMI and Muslims during a class after the September 7 Delhi blast. Pamphlets were distributed until 12 P.M on September 9, claims a hostel student. Also, Professor's remark was talk of the town with hostelers debating it over a cup of tea in the morning, says a student. "Most of the senior students at Alama Iqbal Hostel expressed their dismay that  how come a senior professor could say such things about the university."

Though students are deeply hurt by the Professor's remark but nobody is willing to start a protest as it had happened in 1992 when Professor Mushirul Hassan's statement over Salaman Rushidie book had sparked a violent protest. A lot has changed since then as students have remained quiet. There are few takers for SIO demands of sacking the Professor.

A former general secretary of the students' association at Centre of Management Studies (CMS) Asad Zaidi said: "His comments were definitely in bad taste, but not much should be read in this diatribe. Basu Sir always had a bad temper. Having said that, it is also true that he never differentiated between his students based upon religion. He can be loud at times but he means well for his students. He is the one who introduced a lot of us to the world of "Harvard Business Review" and "The Economist", and we will always be indebted to him for that. It would be sad for Jamia and its students if a controversy is made out of this. Professor Basu, is one of the most learned men in the CMS at least, whose experience, knowledge and guidance will help many students in achieving great heights in their careers. There are many in the CMS against whom action is warranted as they have been running the centre as their fiefdom. Basu Sir is not one of them."

The Professor is a learned man who has even taught in the West, says a source adding: "He is the most talented and qualified teacher in the centre. His presence in the centre is most needed."

Nishat Khan, a former student of Professor Basu and B.Tech E&C 2006 and MBA 2009 pass out from JMI, said: "We have been hearing these from him long time back...he talks like this to every batch. Somehow he is right. We should accept the fact. I have never seen such a talented teacher. His exit from JMI would be a great loss to the university. I still don't understand why he joined JMI because he doesn't need JMI...he has lot of offers from premium business schools (you can google  his profile). About the statement on Muslims community don't know what's the reason behind it because he is different kinda person !!! I remember when he was giving a lecture to us he criticised the Hindu religion (He had said: We don't know how many Bhagwans we have, Muslims at least have one  prophet...) I appeal to MBA students that don't take it seriously he is too old and valuable for you."

Most of the management graduates agree with Khan as they have raised the issue peacefully and now want to forget it and move further. But it appears that many students have decided not to attend his class from Monday (September 13), when the university reopens.

University officials and Professor Basu could not be reached for comment as Jamia is closed and many officials mobiles are switched off.

Graduates are expected to behave, think and act.Reacting to an action does require an element of sense. If someone has said something in a rage, others should not rage either. Polite protest is enough for the Professor but going beyond is simply impolite. Under no circumstances Islam does permit to be impolite to the extend of being insensible.
