Mess fee hike: Jamia hostel students on hunger strike, university tenseOT, September 26, 2012 14:50 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI Hostel students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) refused to take their dinner on Wednesday following university authorities’ move to hike food fee in the mess, according to some protesting students. Abhinabh Pratap Singh told OKHLA TIMES that some 1,200 students of six hostels are on hunger strike after the university decided to hike mess fees by Rs 200. Last year the fee was Rs 1,100 and in one year it has been increased to Rs 2,000. Students were agitated and according to reliable sources on Wednesday night at about 2 AM a meeting was called at Alama Iqbal. It was here that students decided to protest. With no union, students fear that authorities may resort to force to break the protest. At about 9 PM many hostel students were picketing outside the provost office and some students were at hostels to stop others from taking food. Also, some students claimed that food quality was not good and when compared with other central universities JNU and Aligarh Muslim University, food is expensive in JMI. Authorities could not be reached for their comment as they didn’t return the call. Till the filing of the report the situation on the campus was tense with many policemen in plainclothes turning up on the campus, according to a protesting student. A student on condition of the anonymity told OKHLA TIMES that the gates have been locked and students have been stopped from coming out of the hostels. A few days ago students had protested over annual fees hike. Developing story Post a comment Top News
