With only one day to go for the Jamia Millia Islamia Teachers’ Association election (JTA), campaigning is in full swing on the campus with candidates doing their best to win hearts and minds of the teachers.

Some participants have even released their manifesto. Though there are many candidates for the president post the fight is between Khalid Hamidi and MS Bhatt. For the secretary post Rocket Ibrahim and Manisha Sethy are in the race. For Joint secretary the two names that are dong the rounds are of SM Mahmood and Manaullah, according to university sources.

The JTA election 2012 is crucial for the current administration that wants a pliant union. Earlier, the authorities had difficulties taming the outgoing JTA post bearers. Even reports had surfaced about infighting in the JTA meeting with one group siding with the new administration and the other opposing it tooth and nail.

Keeping all these in mind, all eyes will be on the election.

In her manifesto Manisha Sethi, also a prominent member of Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association (JTSA) has already promised to uphold dignity of Jamia teachers if voted to power.

It is too early to declare the favourites in the election that is to be held on May 15, but Kahlid Hamidi may emerge as a consensus candidate for the president post. For the secretary post Manisha is a strong contender.

The buzz on the campus is that one group wants to preserve the minority character of the University.

All told the consensus among most of the teachers is to have a powerful JTA that could stop the new administration from getting away by doing anything, according to a teacher, who doesn’t want to be named.
