Jamia to open two new centres to promote international studiesOT, September 29, 2011 IST Okhla Times Campus Reporter/JMI The Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) will soon establish a China Studies Centre and an Afghanistan Studies Centre. These centres have been sanctioned by the UGC under the scheme of Area Study Centres, claims the media coordinator. China and Afghanistan are two important neighbouring countries of India and the objective of establishing these centres is to promote an Indian understanding of China and Afghanistan in a historical framework as well as from a contemporary perspective, according to a press release issued by the university. The centres will encourage interdisciplinary research focussing on the history, sociology, politics, economics and languages of these two countries, it further mentions. The centres propose to develop a pool of scholars and expertise on China and Afghanistan besides networking with similar institutions engaged in the study of these two countries, says the release. The activities of the centres would be designed to stimulate debate in public spheres for public policy making. The establishment of these new centres will strengthen the existing area studies programmes Jamia Millia Islamia already has on Africa, West Asia, Central Asia, Pakistan and Bangladesh. They will work as complementary programmes to promote international studies. Post a comment Top News
