Some students of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) with backing from left-leaning AISA have called a protest march at about 11:30 AM today from the university to HRD ministry.

The purpose of the protest is to oppose fee hike in Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) and resist undeclared emergency on the campus, according to Sandeepan, Delhi president AISA.

He told OKHLA TIMES over phone that some 200 students are expected to participate in the protest that is to begin from the engineering faculty of JMI to HRD ministry.

“A bus will pick up students from there and then we will go to the HRD ministry where we will express our displeasure at the way students are being treated by JMI authorities. Just see those students who had peacefully protested a few days ago have been given show-cause notices. Also, we will raise the issue of restoration of students union on the campus,” he said.

It is understood that some 25 hostel students who had peacefully protested in front of the provost office a few days ago over Rs 200 hike in mess fee have been issued show-cause notices from the administration.

This is not the first incident that students will be protesting against an average 7 per cent fee hike from the present academic year.

Earlier, also AISA had organized a successful protest meet in Batla House against fee hike in courses. Besides, a group of students of Mass Communication of Research Centre (MCRC) had even written an application to the VC and department authorities demanding a rollback, but all in vain.

AISA distributed pamphlets in the hostels urging students to turn up in huge numbers so as pressure could be mounted on the administration.

As usual Jamia authorities could not reached for comments.
